Fatal Fury is announced on EVO 2023 after 23 years with Terry and Rock debuts!

In famed EVO 2023 fighting game competition, SNK debuts the first gameplay video of its impending Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves!

Our first look at the game shows Terry Bogard and Rock Howard fighting in the trailer announced. Rock Howard’s Fatal Fury City of the Wolves. This teaser trailer debuted at EVO 2023 after SNK first revealed this game at EVO 2022 in 1999 in a brand-new game title.

The trailer features possible competitors Mai Shiranui and B. Jenet, Terry Bogard, and Rock Howard. Although no specific platforms were mentioned, a multi-platform release is most likely.

This next Fatal Fury installment was announced during EVO 2022, and its first teaser trailer debuted at EVO 2023. In the 1990s, one of SNK’s most popular fighting game franchises was the Fatal Fury series, also known as Garou Densetsu in Japan, followed by several sequels and spin-offs. The series would take a sabbatical following the 1999 release of Garou: Mark of the Wolves as SNK lost interest and shifted its attention to other properties in the following years.

This year’s competition provided fans an early peek at the game in action, and an official title after this new Fatal Fury was initially announced at EVO 2022. While the teaser didn’t reveal much about the game or its release date, it did show Terry Bogard and Rock Howard going head-to-head.

Many of SNK’s fighting game franchises saw a resurgence in the late 2010s and early 2020s, including the 2019 Samurai Shodown remake and the 2022 release of The King of Fighters 15. The KOF sequel from last year received mostly positive reviews, despite some criticism of its lack of content. Despite this, SNK has been offering DLC characters and post-launch support, such as when they revealed Duo Lon for KOF15’s second season pass at this year’s EVO. The brand-new Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves trailer from SNK was also displayed.

This trailer begins with a quick broadcast that can be heard around the city, during which multiple individuals fight and speak simultaneously. It then transitions to gameplay footage, showcasing Terry Bogard and Rock Howard, two of SNK’s biggest stars in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. The legendary clothing Terry wore in Garou: Mark of the Wolves has been kept, and Rock Howard has the same vintage attire. Despite minor cosmetic changes, the models seem to be recycled from KOF15.

The Fatal Fury series, also called the Garou series, debuted in 1991 on the Neo Geo with Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. The final installment was Garou: Mark of the Wolves in 1999. However, many franchise characters, notably Terry, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi, have appeared in SNK’s King of Fighters series.

Also shown to us were Geese Tower, National Park, South Town Airport,? [Abandoned Dojo], Live House “Old Line,” and Factory are some settings where Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves players will engage in combat.

Rock and Terry both have signature moves, with Rock using his father’s Reppuken and Terry using his Power Wave.

Observant viewers could guess who may appear in this Garou sequel based on the trailer’s initial broadcast. Potential opponents for Rock and Terry include Mai Shiranui, B. Jenet, Billy Kane, Hotaru Futaba, and even Kain R. Heinlein, the final boss of Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

SNK has stated that Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is “furiously in development” and has urged fans to check back for more details as they become available. Although the trailer didn’t specify any target platforms, it is expected to be a multi-platform release based on the developer’s prior releases.

Because several of its other fighting games, including KOF13 and Samurai Shodown, have been getting patches to add it, the fighting game maker will probably implement a rollback netcode for this game. KOF15 included it at launch.

Some fans online, especially @FGAnniversaries, claim some of the voices heard during the introduction of these locales belong to Andy Bogard, Mai Shiranui, B. Jenet, Billy Kane, Marco (maybe Ryo), Hotaru Futaba, Tizoc, and Kain R. Heinlein.

This could be further evidence that Billy Kane and Kain R. Heinlein will appear in this new edition since we were given a teaser image at EVO 2022 that included two silhouetted characters thought to be Billy Kane and Kain R. Heinlein.
